Is it better or worse to carry a mortgage debt when trying to secure scholarship or grant money for college?

My daughter will be applying to colleges next year.

When I applied for scholarships and grants my mortgage had no affect on the outcome (I am going to school in Georgia). I will tell you that having a mortgage over my head in addition to going to college really adds to the stress level.
