What is Freelancing? ?

I look at alot of the “workat home mom” job boards and always look into a specific area, but I always have ignored the “freelancing” because… I have NOOO idea what that is!! What do you do? How do you freelance and is there a reputable income in freelancing… is it worth the trouble of taking time out to learn about it while putting things off, can you profit from freelancing or is it just another one of those things that you hope you will be good at doing… and can you make a fulltime living out of it? Thanks
